La salsa nasce più come progetto urbano che come singolo ritmo “inventato”: è la convergenza di son cubano, mambo, guajira/guaguancó, cha-cha-chá e jazz afro-americano, ridefinita dai migranti caraibici (soprattutto portoricani e cubani) nella New York degli anni ’60-’70. Fra le cronache più autorevoli c’è “The Book of Salsa” di César Miguel Rondón, che racconta il passaggio dal mambo del Palladium (anni ’50) alla stagione dei barrios nuyoricani, con artisti come Willie Colón, Héctor Lavoe, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto e Celia Cruz. Rondón insiste sul ruolo di Fania Records, etichetta che legò la scena in un immaginario condiviso e in una filiera industriale (concerti, cinema, media). Sul piano musicologico, studiosi come Frances Aparicio e Peter Manuel spiegano come la salsa sia diventata simbolo pan-latino: non “musica cubana con altro nome”, ma un ibrido urbano in cui entrano anche armonie jazzistiche (Palmieri, Papo Lucca), R&B e persino rock, pur restando la grammatica cubana il telaio di base. Il termine “salsa” circola in vari contesti già dal Novecento, ma per l’uso genere-etichetta è spesso citato l’impresario Izzy Sanabria, che nel 1973 conduce a New York un tv show chiamato proprio Salsa: l’etichetta “salseggia” l’immaginario e facilita la vendita di un sound complesso. Il film Our Latin Thing (1972) e i concerti delle Fania All-Stars (Cheetah, poi Yankee Stadium 1973) fissano su pellicola e nell’immaginario la stagione “dura” della salsa: cori poderosi, tumbao spinto, assoli percussivi, sezione fiati “a coltellata”.
